Happy birthday to me - recommend a restaurant

August 12th, 2008 · 8 Comments

So my birthday is coming up (very very soon) and I’m going to be .. um..older. My lovely husband has offered to take me out to dinner.

This is where you come in. No criteria at all. Where in Perth would you recommend? Bear in mind that there isn’t much time for a booking so Jacksons et al (and we went there a few months ago for our wedding anniversary) is out.

Ok, I lied, there is criteria. My husband isn’t fond of French food as a rule (foolish boy) so prefer non-French. I’m allergic to nuts and sesame seeds so sesame and nut-tastic cuisines like Lebanese isn’t ideal either.

So please let me have your recommendations. Thanks in advance. For your reference here is a post detailing some Perth restaurants I don’t like.

    Hey beeton,

I’ve eaten at Bar One a few times over the past couple of months and am yet to be disappointed. Food is always great and the service well above the refined disinterest that is pretty much standard for the bulk of Perth’s dining establishments.

Divido in Mt Hawthorn is really worth checking out. It might be top of the list for MY birthday which is not far away either.

Sensational food, interesting wine list, and a big plus for Perth - great service.

Hi Tracy, it is funny you say that, because I was looking at Divido’s degustation menu online yesterday.

It certainly does look good and it is local which gives it bonus points too.

Galileo in Shenton Park is lovely, have always had excellent food and always had exceptional service. Woodfired dishes are best!
Divido is wonderful, not good during the day as it is a bit cafe like but night time is lovely, service is Melbourne-ese in terms of making you feel special. Food is glorious, wine list is pretty interesting. Lots of love and care have gone into this restaurant.

So where are you gonna go? Or maybe you can have a “birthweek” and go to all of them?

Balthazar, fo shiz. Please. For what they offer, (fantastic mod-aus) it is really very well priced, it’s a relaxed yet intimate upmarket atmosphere, (so you can feel fancy, but not nervous) and if it’s just the two of you, you should be able to get a booking. The food… is mouth watering. Plus, you have to try the desert platter for two. Nom.

Otherwise, it’s got to be Duende. Great tapas, fantastic wine list- where you can order by everything by the glass!- And a similarly great atmosphere (slightly more relaxed/ low key than Balthazar). It’s a great one if I have misunderstood and there are more than two of you.
